MELBOURNE - PART 1

On Saturday, May 1, 2010, Scott, Juliet and I traveled by plane to Melbourne for a 3-night stay. After checking into the hotel, we decided to walk over to the Eureka Tower and visit the Skydeck to get a 360 degree view of Melbourne.

On our walk we started noticing scores of weird looking people dressed up like zombies. For the uninitiated (which we were), we happened upon the 3rd Annual Zombie Shuffle (or Zombie Walk). A Zombie Shuffle is an "organized" public gathering of people donning zombie-garb. A set route is planned and pre-defined via a Facebook group. We had no idea we would be "terrorized" in the streets of Melbourne with blood, gore, and an insatiable lust for braaaaains! It was pretty funny!

The Eureka Tower and Skydeck 88

The Eureka Tower - opened on October 11, 2006, taking 4 years and 2 months to complete. It is the world's tallest residential tower and cost approximately $500 million to build. The glass on the top 10 floors is 24 carat gold plated. The white horizontal lines on the tower represents the linear line markings on a surveyors measuring staff.

The Skydeck's lifts are the fastest in the southern hemisphere, traveling at more than 9 metres per second. The Skydeck is situated on the 88th floor and is the highest public vantage point (285 metres) in the southern hemisphere.

This "elevator shaft" was actually painted on the floor of the tower elevator - pretty cool!

AAMI Park - Melbourne's world-class new stadium, which opens on May 7, 2010. This stadium takes its place alongside the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) (100,000 capacity), the Rod Laver Arena (tennis - capacity 15,000), Dockland Stadium (50,000 capacity), Melbourne Sports & Aquatic Centre, and Etihad Stadium. Melbourne loves its sports - from horse racing, motor sports, tennis, surfing, rugby, soccer, football....and the list goes on. I guess that is why they need so many stadiums. This new stadium can hold 30,050 spectators and took more than 2-1/2 years to build at a cost of $267.5 million.

Melbourne Sports & Aquatic Centre

Flinders Street Station, covering two blocks, is the central railway station of the suburban rail network of Melbourne.

Melbourne Aquarium

Federation Square is a cultural precinct, comprising of a series of buildings containing a public broadcaster, art galleries, a museum, cinemas, exhibition spaces, auditoria, restaurants, bars and shops around two major public spaces, one covered (the Atrium), and the other open to the sky.

The Arts Centre is a complex of theaters and concert halls. The Centre is unusual in that its theaters and concert hall are built underground. The Art Centre hosts a large number of international performances and production companies, such as the Royal Shakespeare Company.

Sidney Myer Music Bowl is an outdoor performance venue located in the lawns and gardens of Kings Domain, quite close to the Arts Centre. The Bowl holds major events including Carols by Candlelight held every year on Christmas Eve.

Shrine of Remembrance was built as a memorial to the men and women of Victoria who served in World War I.
