CAIRNS - DAY 6 OF 7

Today, April 15, 2010, we decided to drive north along the coast to the Daintree area which is almost as far as the road will take you unless you have a 4-wheel drive vehicle. When we arrived at Daintree we decided to take a river cruise on the Crocodile Express, hoping to see a crocodile in the wild.

We were lucky and actually saw a very large crocodile sleeping on the sand and a smaller crocodile almost hidden on the bank of the river. We also saw a couple of tree snakes (you really have to look closely as they blend in with the tree branches). Our river guide was a local man, who grew up on the river so was very knowledgeable and told some great stories.

Mossman is a small sugar town situated in the Mossman River Valley, 75 km north of Cairns. We stopped to get a closer look at the sugar cane, banana trees and coconut trees. I've never seen sugar cane fields before or banana trees.

We stopped at Mossman Gorge on the way back to Trinity Beach, one of the areas main attractions, which offers walking tracks, gorges, clear-water creeks and waterfalls. We were going to go swimming but the water was ice cold and the mosquites were eating us alive. Unfortunately we didn't bring bug spray.
