THE BLUE MOUNTAINS - IMPERIAL CAVE (Part 5c)

The Imperial Cave - 258 steps; 1 hour tour; length 1070 meters

The Imperial Cave is the easiest of all the show cave tours as it follows the path an the ancient river passage which is mostly level. It offers beautiful crystal formations, ancient fossils plus the opportunity to visit the underground river. When first approaching the underground river, it looks like an emerald piece of glass rather than water. It was amazing.

Features of the Imperial Cave are The Sinkhole, Ridley's Shortcut, Lot's Wife (a 2 meter Stalagmite, tall and slim), the Alabaster Column (creamy white calcite), and the Crystal Cities, looking like an ancient fortification.

The story of Ridley's Shortcut: A short time after the cave was found, a gentleman by the name of Ridley was passing through the Elder Cave and fell down the sinkhole 56 feet. His fall was broken by wire netting at the base of the sinkhole which had been placed there to help protect the cave.

And as its name suggests, The Shawl Cave is filled with beautiful, delicate shawls.

When the floor of the Imperial Cave was excavated in 1975, bones were discovered. On display in the Imperial Cave are bones of a Tasmanian Devil (long extinct on the mainland - now only found in Tasmania) and a Wallaby.
