THE BLUE MOUNTAINS - ORIENT CAVE (Part 5b)

Orient Cave - 358 steps; length 470 meters, 1.5 hrs

The literature states 358 steps in this cave however does not count the steps that you need to climb to get to the entrance which is called the Binoomea Cut. In 1954 the Binoomea Cut was blasted from the rock to make an easier access into the cave. Binoomea is an aboriginal word meaning "dark places." By the time we were finished with our cave tours, my calves were barking and rather than climb more steps to the parking area to get into the car, I had the kids bring the car to me. Age does have its advantages along with the disadvantages.
The Orient Cave was found in 1904 by James Carvosso Wiburd. It features rich crystal decorations illuminated by the latest techology lighting. The extensive redevelopment of the Orient Cave involved hiding hundreds of lights and kilometers of cables to present one of the most stunning, environmentally responsible and technically advanced tourist caves in the world.

The Pillar of Hercules

The Orient Cave consists of The Batsend Chamber (called this because when groups approached from the River Cave, large number of bats would fly ahead until they reached this area), Persian Chamber, Egyptian Chamber and the Indian Chamber.
